Community Broadband

In 2018, several members of ORA formed a small committee to explore how Arlington County could use its dark fiber network to bridge its digital divide and spur equitable economic development in some the county’s poorest areas. The ArlFiber collective has been exploring whether a multistakeholder internet service provider can be formed to lease the county’s dark fiber and provide low-cost, high-speed internet to small businesses and affordable housing projects in 22204 (Columbia Pike, Green Valley). They have also lobbied members of the Arlington delegation to the Virginia General Assembly to put forth a bill on dismantling barriers to municipal and community broadband in Virginia, which finally happened in the 2020 session.
